Hope for the Future

Hopefully you have a job that pays the bills, gives you hope for the future and provides meaning to your life. But for some people, life’s situations has them dealing with tough times. They can’t find work and provide for themselves or their families. For them, each day is a challenge, each day looks bleak, and each day can’t end soon enough.

Photo of Norma Olson, Nurse Assistant Training ManagerThe Twin Cities Red Cross offers hope in a field that could launch a person from a career of despair into a lifetime of dreams. One road is through our Nurse Assistant Training program. Healthcare is a major industry in the Twin Cities. Workers with families often enjoy the benefits of a flexible work schedule. The Red Cross provides a meaningful road to potential jobs.

Norma Olson is the program manager for the Twin Cities Red Cross Nurse Assistant Training. Norma has been a nurse for 40 years, first as an LPN and then as an RN. She takes great pride in the program and shares a story of Takema.

Takema's Story

“Takema was one of our students. She was 19 years old, a single mother of 3, living with her abusive boyfriend. She needed a way out of a dangerous cycle of life. Takema took our Nurse Assistant Training course, but didn’t pass the final exam. Her failure only re-enforced what others have told her, that she won’t amount to much in life. “I can’t do anything right.” But before Takema was able to leave the Red Cross that day, her instructor Doreen caught up with her and convinced her to take the test again. She did and, guess what? Takema passed. She was dancing with joy in the classroom, perhaps for the first time in a very long time.

  • The course lasts 91 hours
  • Course has two components
    • Lecture: Imparts a basic understanding of aging, elderly care and disease
    • Hands-on skills practice: Focuses on ADL, activities of daily living
  • The final portion of the class provides hands-on care of residents in a local Nursing Home. Students are under the direct supervision of a Red Cross NAT Instructor.
  • Students have a choice of taking the course in one of four locations, two in Minneapolis and two in St. Paul
  • Our graduates consistently score above average on Minnesota state skills tests
  • Upon state certification, graduates have the potential to earn $10/hour or more at jobs in nursing homes, hospitals, home care agencies and assisted-living centers
  • The NAT course is a pre-requisite to becoming a nurse. LPNs can earn approximately $18,000/year; RNs earn between $25,000-$60,000/year

Tuition and Enrollment Requirements

Tuition for the course is $625 must be paid prior to the start of class. Two requirements must be met before enrollment:

  • Students must either provide proof of post-secondary schooling, OR must take and pass a pre-test for reading and comprehension. This test is provided at no additional cost to the student.
